President Pervez Mush-arraf laid foundation stone of the University of Engineering , Science and Technology, Lahore . The university is a part of a programme for establishing nine such varsities in Pakistan with developed countries.

The varsity in Lahore will be set up with assistance of University of Technology , Graz , Austria . Pakistan Army has provided 100 acre land worth Rs. 6 billion free of cost at Defence Housing Authority.

Other eight engineering, science and technology universities will be set up with the help of Austria, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, China and South Korea with Rs. 250 billion within 10 years.

Budget of HEC had been raised from Rs. 500 million to Rs. 22 billion to promote higher education in Pakistan . Name suggested for UEST, Lahore is Pakistan-Austria University . Work on a similar France assisted varsity in Karachi has begun while on another in Sialkot would be soon initiated with the help of Sweden .

With UESTs Pakistani youth will acquire world-class engineering and technology education while foreign companies investing in Pakistan would have efficient human resources.
